He fulfilled a two-year term as treasurer and is currently finishing his second year as vice president.  He’s run the Boston Marathon eight times, completed Ironman Florida and is training to finish Ironman number two in 2011.

An impressive resume yet Ann Arbor Track Club Vice President Kevin Galvin maintains that his proudest achievement is “watching my three children grow up and establish themselves as terrific, caring and loving individuals and realizing that my wife and I may have had something to do with that.”

Without a doubt.

“A stand up guy and just an all around good person,” is how Jim Allen, a member of the Ford Athletic Swim & Triathlon club, which Galvin joined in 2008 while training for his first Ironman, described his training partner.

“He’s just a great guy,” Allen asserted.  “He’s a leader, he gives back and he radiates camaraderie.”

Fellow FAST member, Jane Sanders, who has participated in some of the group bike rides led by Galvin, agreed with Allen.

“He is a nice guy and a great person to train with.”

Running for Galvin “has always been a time to reflect, appreciate nature, plan, problem solve and relieve the stresses of the day.  It’s also a great way to establish and build on relationships.”

Kevin would advise runners to “enjoy running for the many personal benefits that it can give you – good health, a chance to get to know yourself, social contacts.  Races and personal records can be fun, but each race has only one winner, and PRs fade over time.  The joy of running can last a lifetime.”

At 57 years of age, Galvin has been running for more than three decades “with only a handful of injuries” and no plans to stop.

This year’s Bank of America Chicago Marathon became Kevin’s “all-time favorite race.”  Galvin’s brother and three children also ran the marathon, and a picture was taken of the ‘quintet,’ with their medals “on a beautiful day in Grant Park” – a real dream come true.

Outside of running, Galvin spends quite a bit of time giving back to others.  He is a certified Court Appointed Special Advocate volunteer, and most recently, Kevin, along with his wife of 34 years, began volunteering as a tutor for schools in the cities of Detroit and Wayne.

Kevin “subscribes to the 1970s Firesign Theatre theory that ‘we’re all bozos on this bus’.”  Revel in the now - we don’t know everything, we can’t know everything, there’s always more to learn.

An important reality to learn from our VP whose favorite part of being on the board of the AATC is “the opportunity to work with some great people and learn and experience a lot of new things.”

Right back at ‘cha Kevin.
